Since the day he first flew over Metropolis, the Man of Steel has been a hero of mythological proportions. Whether saving the world or defending America, the Last Son of Krypton has proven that the true measure of a man is his actions and not his abilities. SUPERMAN: THE ACTION COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 3 presents the original adventures that are now the foundation of Superman's legendary status. Influenced by the Max Fleischer animated Superman cartoons of the 1940s, this stunning book showcases the Man of Steel as he takes on the villainy of Domino, the genius of the Trickster, the dementia of the Puzzler, and the deadliness of the super-powered Lex Luthor and his incredible Powerstone. |

The latest vintage comic-book character reprinted in the lavish,
hardcover DC Archives series was born when the 1950s "sci-fi" craze was
grafted onto the superhero genre. Adam Strange, a scientist from Earth,
was transported by a "Zeta Beam" to the distant planet Rann. Acquiring a
colorful spacesuit and a jetpack, he became his adopted world's
champion, saving it from space invaders, when he wasn't romancing his
beautiful Rannian sweetheart, Alanna. His comic-book hit its stride with
the fourth issue, when Carmine Infantino came aboard as illustrator; his
sleek, modern designs and streamlined figures were perfect for the
futuristic milieu. Adam's approach to conflict generally saw him
overcome foes scientifically rather than physically, like his
super-powered peers. His adventures were aimed at a somewhat older
comics readership, presumably the adolescents who keep the sf magazines
in business, and they hold up well today, despite their naivete. Adam
never achieved major success but is fondly remembered by many longtime
comics fans, who will welcome this handsome volume. Gordon Flagg Adam Strange, who traveled via "Zeta Beam" to distant Rann, where
he fought alien threats and romanced "interplanetary sweetheart"
Alanna, was never one of the most popular superheroes in the
comic-book universe of the 1960s. Science fiction had fallen out of
favor among comics readers, and the Adam Strange stories were
relatively complex by the standards of the day. Due in large part to
the stylish, well-designed artwork of Carmine Infantino, however,
the series is fondly recalled by longtime comics fans, who will
relish the 15 early-'60s tales collected in this big, handsome
volume. Gordon Flagg After being mysteriously teleported from
Earth to the distant world called Rann,
archaeologist Adam Strange became a cosmic
adventure and defender of his new home planet.
In this incredible volume, Adam Strange faces
the threats of the Cloud Creature and the Robot
Wraith, unravels the riddle of the Runaway
Rockets, and contends with war between Rann and
Earth. Written by Gardner Fox; art by various Before the Justice League of America, there was the Justice Society of
America, DC's first and foremost super hero team. Reprinted here are the
original tales from the 1940s when the original Flash, Green Lantern, Spectre,
Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Hourman, Sandman, Atom and Johnny Thunder decided to join
forces against threats that were too great for them to face alone. Setting
the standard for super hero teams forever, these early adventures are
reprinted exactly as they appeared over 60 years ago. Looking back at a time
when the JSA fought for simple truths such as America and Democracy. DC ARCHIVE EDITIONS | 272pg. | Color | Hardcover | In 1940, DC Comics created the concept of the super-team by bringing
together Green Lantern, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and many others to battle
powers that threatened the entire world. From the World War II era comes the Justice Society of America: Green
Lantern, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, and more of our nations greatest heroes,
banded together against the forces of evil. These stories, from the height
of World War II, pit the JSA against menaces on the homefront and around the
globe. Originally published as World War II was ending, the stories reprinted in
ALL STAR COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 6 are historical snapshots of the emotions
that many Americans were experiencing at that time. Mixing tales in which
the Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Hawkman, and the rest of the Justice
Society of America fought against alien robots, traveled through time and
battled sentient paintings with adventures that touched on the emotional
return of our soldiers and the prevalent anti-German sentiment, these
stories simultaneously entertained and mirrored the collective consciousness
of the nation. As the original super-hero team, the Justice Society of America defended
the nation against all threats domestic, international, and extraterrestrial
in the 1940s. Beautifully reprinted in ALL STAR COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 7 are
some of their most classic tales and adventures from that era. Boasting a
lineup that included Green Lantern, Flash, Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Dr. Mid-Nite,
and Johnny Thunder, the JSA find themselves up against a diverse set of
adversaries such as the super-scientist Landor, the brutish monster Solomon
Grundy, and the emotion-controlling Psycho-Pirate. Reprinting legendary tales from the 1940s (issues 34 to 38), ALL STAR
COMICS ARCHIVES VOL. 8 features the original adventures of the world's
premier super-team, the Justice Society of America. In this book of classic
stories, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Dr. Mid-Nite,
Johnny Thunder and Hawkman must battle the villainy of the Wizard,
Brainwave, Vandal Savage, the Gambler, Per Degaton, and the Thinker as the
newly formed Injustice Society of the World.

Batman: The Dark Knight Archives, Vol. 5 (DC Archive Editions)
To the Batman fan, this particular volume is a particularly
gratifying one, as we are seeing some of Dick Sprang's earliest work
on the character he was probably best known for illustrating.
This isn't to degrade the work of Jerry Robinson, Jack Burnley or
even Bob Kane himself, whose work also appears in this volume.
But Sprang, who actually began illustrating Batman in 1941, but
whose stories were stockpiled until a few years later, brought a
dazzling, magnificent, vibrant look to the feature unmatched by any
artist of the time. In fact, he [later w/Charlie Paris inking] set
the standard for the character, but was virtually unknown for who he
really was [by name] until years and years later when he finally
attended his first comic convention in Kansas City.

Spanning Adventure Comics 340-349 (January-October 1966), the fifth volume of Legion of Super-Heroes Archives is where the book started its peak period. It begins with the mad machine Computo who kills a Legionnaire; a member faces expulsion for killing; Ferro Lad, Karate Kid, and Princess Projectra are introduced; the warlike Khund race is discovered; and Doctor Regulus and Universo make their first appearances. But more important than the new characters was the new writer, 13-year-old wunderkind Jim Shooter, whose writing (and storyboarding, the large-panel style of which is noticeably different from the norm) would carry the Legion to new heights.--David Horiuchi |

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 10 (DC Archive Editions)
The 10th Legion of Super-Heroes volume in DC's invaluable
Archive Editions series catches the Legion in a period of transition in
the early 1970s.The LSH was relegated to seven-page stories in the back
of Superboy's comic (and not even every issue), and because that's not
the ideal format to cover 30 heroes, most of the stories concentrate on
a couple Legionnaires. Soon the Legion became popular enough that the
title eventually became Superboy Starring the Legion of Super-Heroes,
and the issues in this volume do contain a number of milestones of
Legion lore. Wildfire makes his debut as an applicant named ERG-1 in
issue #195, Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel get married in issue #200, and
then there were the sexy new costumes, including Saturn Girl's pink
bikini and Phantom Girl's bell bottoms. The 232-page book includes
biographies of the creative talent (including one-shot inker Mike Grell,
who would go on to make his own mark on the Legion) and a nice
introduction by the artist who grew up on the Legion during this period,
Dave Cockrum, before he went on to help reinvent the X-Men.--David
Horiuchi.

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 11 (DC Archive Editions)
The 11th volume of Legion of Super-Heroes Archives is
marked by the full-time arrival of artist Mike Grell. The stories, in
Superboy 203-212, were mostly by Cary Bates and E. Nelson Bridwell
before Legion legend Jim Shooter returned, and the general format was a
main story followed by a shorter story concentrating on a Legionnaire or
two.The stories--the Legion of Super-Executioners, the Legion of
Super-Villains, a showdown with a band of Legion rejects, a ghostly
soldier--are enjoyable but minor, and even the death of a Legionnaire
seems like an anti-climax.Still, no one could draw Dream Girl in a
negligee quite like Grell. --David Horiuchi.

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 12 (DC Archive Editions) The 12th volume of the Legion of Super-Heroes' DC Archives series finds the 30th-century team still in a period of transition after being resurrected in the back pages of Superboy. Issues 213-223 of Superboy pit the Legion against some arch foes (the Time Trapper, a regrettably touchy-feely Fatal Five) as well as other random bad guys who only stand a chance against this mob of heroes by somehow turning their powers against them. The stories (usually a longer story balanced by a shorter "character" story focusing on a Legionnaire or two) are rather minor even despite the return of LSH legendary writer Jim Shooter, but a couple of the highlights are "The Charge of the Doomed Legionnaires," in which Braniac 5 tries to outwit a Khund general, and "The Trillion-Dollar Trophies," featuring Grimbor and the irresistible Charma. Mike Grell gets to show off his flashy artwork through the beauty of Charma and of a strange woman Superboy rescues from the path of a magnetic train. Also in this period was the introduction of Tyroc and the launch of Karate Kid's short-lived (15 issues) solo series, the first issue of which is included in this volume. --David Horiuchi.
