Adam Strange Archives

Adam Strange Archives, Vol. 1 (DC Archive Editions) Adam Strange #1 - Click to Order
Price: $31.49

The latest vintage comic-book character reprinted in the lavish, hardcover DC Archives series was born when the 1950s "sci-fi" craze was grafted onto the superhero genre. Adam Strange, a scientist from Earth, was transported by a "Zeta Beam" to the distant planet Rann. Acquiring a colorful spacesuit and a jetpack, he became his adopted world's champion, saving it from space invaders, when he wasn't romancing his beautiful Rannian sweetheart, Alanna. His comic-book hit its stride with the fourth issue, when Carmine Infantino came aboard as illustrator; his sleek, modern designs and streamlined figures were perfect for the futuristic milieu. Adam's approach to conflict generally saw him overcome foes scientifically rather than physically, like his super-powered peers. His adventures were aimed at a somewhat older comics readership, presumably the adolescents who keep the sf magazines in business, and they hold up well today, despite their naivete. Adam never achieved major success but is fondly remembered by many longtime comics fans, who will welcome this handsome volume. Gordon Flagg

Adam Strange, who traveled via "Zeta Beam" to distant Rann, where he fought alien threats and romanced "interplanetary sweetheart" Alanna, was never one of the most popular superheroes in the comic-book universe of the 1960s. Science fiction had fallen out of favor among comics readers, and the Adam Strange stories were relatively complex by the standards of the day. Due in large part to the stylish, well-designed artwork of Carmine Infantino, however, the series is fondly recalled by longtime comics fans, who will relish the 15 early-'60s tales collected in this big, handsome volume. To the Batman fan, this particular volume is a particularly gratifying one, as we are seeing some of Dick Sprang's earliest work on the character he was probably best known for illustrating.  This isn't to degrade the work of Jerry Robinson, Jack Burnley or even Bob Kane himself, whose work also appears in this volume.   But Sprang, who actually began illustrating Batman in 1941, but whose stories were stockpiled until a few years later, brought a dazzling, magnificent, vibrant look to the feature unmatched by any artist of the time. In fact, he [later w/Charlie Paris inking] set the standard for the character, but was virtually unknown for who he really was [by name] until years and years later when he finally attended his first comic convention in Kansas City.
Sprang became a lifelong friend of mine and I worked with him closely to ID art he was unaware that he even did.
No serious Batman collector can do WITHOUT this Archive. Classic Batman w/great writing and imaginative illustrative story telling!!!

ENEMY ACE ARCHIVES VOL. 1 collects the earliest tales of Hans von Hammer, the greatest fighter pilot of World War I. Utilizing superb characterization, these elegantly crafted stories offer an intriguing and rare look at war by presenting it through the eyes of "the enemy." Although a German soldier, Enemy Ace must still struggle with the agony of survival and the senseless deaths of young men. This book shows that war is not simply good guys versus bad guys but instead human versus human. Showcase #57,58, Our World at War #151-155

The Enemy Ace Archives, Vol. 2 (DC Archive Editions) The Enemy Ace Archives, Vol. 2 (DC Archive Editions)
By Joe Kubert
List Price: $49.99
Price: $31.49

Enemy Ace is unique among American war comics in that its star, Rittmeister Hans von Hammer, fought for Germany. The risky concept was made more palatable by the fact that the stories were set during World War I, a half-century before their late 1960s-early 1970s publication, as well as by the antiwar sentiment of the times. The tales were rather formulaic--squadron leader von Hammer flies "the killer skies," battling his foes mercilessly though within a strict code of honor while brooding over the young pilots he sends to their deaths--yet remain compelling thanks to the talent behind them. After more than a decade of writing Sgt. Rock and the like, Kanigher was ready for the challenge of something a bit more ambitious; and premier war comics artist Joe Kubert adeptly portrayed the excitement of aerial dogfights and the poignancy of von Hammer's internal conflicts. If it never transcends its genre as Harvey Kurtzman's early fifties EC Comics war stories did,Enemy Ace is still one of the best comics of its era. Gordon Flagg

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 10 (DC Archive Editions)
Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 10 (DC Archive Editions)

The 10th Legion of Super-Heroes volume in DC's invaluable Archive Editions series catches the Legion in a period of transition in the early 1970s.The LSH was relegated to seven-page stories in the back of Superboy's comic (and not even every issue), and because that's not the ideal format to cover 30 heroes, most of the stories concentrate on a couple Legionnaires. Soon the Legion became popular enough that the title eventually became Superboy Starring the Legion of Super-Heroes, and the issues in this volume do contain a number of milestones of Legion lore. Wildfire makes his debut as an applicant named ERG-1 in issue #195, Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel get married in issue #200, and then there were the sexy new costumes, including Saturn Girl's pink bikini and Phantom Girl's bell bottoms. The 232-page book includes biographies of the creative talent (including one-shot inker Mike Grell, who would go on to make his own mark on the Legion) and a nice introduction by the artist who grew up on the Legion during this period, Dave Cockrum, before he went on to help reinvent the X-Men.--David Horiuchi.  Legion #10 Superboy #172-202

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 11 (DC Archive Editions)
Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 11 (DC Archive Editions)

The 11th volume of Legion of Super-Heroes Archives is marked by the full-time arrival of artist Mike Grell. The stories, in Superboy 203-212, were mostly by Cary Bates and E. Nelson Bridwell before Legion legend Jim Shooter returned, and the general format was a main story followed by a shorter story concentrating on a Legionnaire or two.The stories--the Legion of Super-Executioners, the Legion of Super-Villains, a showdown with a band of Legion rejects, a ghostly soldier--are enjoyable but minor, and even the death of a Legionnaire seems like an anti-climax.Still, no one could draw Dream Girl in a negligee quite like Grell. --David Horiuchi.  Legion #11 Superboy #203-212

Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 12 (DC Archive Editions)
Legion of Super-Heroes Archives, Vol. 12 (DC Archive Editions)

The 12th volume of the Legion of Super-Heroes' DC Archives series finds the 30th-century team still in a period of transition after being resurrected in the back pages of Superboy. Issues 213-223 of Superboy pit the Legion against some arch foes (the Time Trapper, a regrettably touchy-feely Fatal Five) as well as other random bad guys who only stand a chance against this mob of heroes by somehow turning their powers against them. The stories (usually a longer story balanced by a shorter "character" story focusing on a Legionnaire or two) are rather minor even despite the return of LSH legendary writer Jim Shooter, but a couple of the highlights are "The Charge of the Doomed Legionnaires," in which Braniac 5 tries to outwit a Khund general, and "The Trillion-Dollar Trophies," featuring Grimbor and the irresistible Charma. Mike Grell gets to show off his flashy artwork through the beauty of Charma and of a strange woman Superboy rescues from the path of a magnetic train. Also in this period was the introduction of Tyroc and the launch of Karate Kid's short-lived (15 issues) solo series, the first issue of which is included in this volume. --David Horiuchi.  Legion #12 Superboy #213-223, Karate Kid #1

Superman in World's Finest

Superman: World's Finest Comics Archives, Vol. 1 (DC Archive Editions) Superman in World's Finest Vol. 1
List Price: $49.95
Price: $35.56

This volume collects all of the Superman adventures from the World's Finest comics, which started off as the New York World's Fair comic and sold for a then very expensive 25 cents. These are the solo Superman stories (he wouldn't team up w/ Batman until years later). Unlike the other volumes, this one covers about four or five years since it was released quarterly and each contained only one short Superman stories. This volume also contains the first cover depicting Superman and Batman together. The stories are not much different than the Action Comics or Superman's own comic. The good thing is you get more super villians in this one than the usual early 40's comics- Superman isn't just fighting gangsters or corrupt businessmen in this. There's the Insect Master for one, and Metallo as well as a few others.
