HAVENS: LIVING HERE - At a Horse Farm, Quiet Times, Hard Work and Time to Tally Ho!

New York Times, The (NY) - Friday, April 26, 2002
Author: Interview by Marine Cole

Abstract: Interview with Barbara and John Cammeyer on living on Allentown, NJ, horse farm; similar homes for sale around nation noted; maps; photos (M)

WHO: Barbara and John Cammeyer. She teaches high-school science. He is in the printing and mailing business. They live on a farm and do some of the work themselves, but they also get help from a farm manager, Sergio Arias, who has been working with them for seven years.
WHAT: A 17-acre horse farm with 11 stalls and four sheds. They lease six acres to neighbors.

WHERE: Allentown, N.J., 1 hour 15 minutes from New York City.

Barbara: We bought the farm in 1989 for a weekend escape when we lived in East Brunswick, N.J. My daughter was in a pony club, and I fell in love with the area. One of the mothers at the pony club called me when a house was on the market. I was spending so much time at the farm that I really wanted to live there. We moved to the country one year later.

John: We both love riding horses, so we decided to buy a farm. My daughter was a champion rider when she was a teenager.

Barbara: This part of New Jersey is very unknown. It's a very quiet, historic town, an old sleepy little town. It's mostly horse farms. It's very rural. I grew up in New York City. It was my dream to move to the country.

John: I like to raise horses. I breed them; that's my hobby. We have two horses that are less than one month old, and we have four mares that we breed. Barbara likes fox hunting. She competes in hunter paces.

Barbara: We have seven racehorses and six pleasure horses for fox hunting and driving. Sometimes I have barn parties. It would be a little lonely if it was just us and the horses. Every time I walk around my farm I realize how lucky I am, but my dream didn't include the amount of hard work. You have freezing pipes to deal with. You have horses that get injured. Unless it's serious, I am also my own vet. I deliver the babies. Interview by Marine Cole
